A Lousy Gig
When I was young
and bitten by
the Show-biz bug
I packed my trunk
and ran away
with the Flea Circus.
But it wasn’t easy:
Clowns kept drowning
in the custard pies,
the Lion Tamer
fled
to live on an old
grey tabby cat
and a demented infant
giggling
on the front row
high
on candy-floss and cola
cruelly swatted
the Strong Man.
And then again
you know
it’s never wise
to deal with those
who bite the hand
that feeds them
so
I gave it up:
I pawned the props
tore down the tent
and freed the fleas.
For
in the end
you see
I just couldn’t
stand
to scratch
and scratch
and scratch
to make
a living.
