Icarus Descending

The descent came to him
as a surprise. No sooner
had his wings touched the clouds
when dazzled by the sun,
he began to fall.

The sea, a beguiling
sheet of blue, rushed up
toward him at lightning speed.
Feathers whirled around,
gusts of wind licked his body.

He was dizzy with delight.
Relieved of any burden
on his back, any ground
to endure his weight,
he finally felt free:

he felt faint, he felt so light
that he thought he might take flight.
